Solid gold cabaret on at theatre
Feathers and sequins will be commonplace at Clarence Street Theatre after the cabaret dancers move in next week.
The Solid Gold Impact cabaret company members are in their final stages of rehearsals for Solid Gold Impact.
The live show, directed, choreographed and designed by Kerry Davis, features 15 dancers and nine singers.
It is Davis’s fifth Impact cabaret show staged in Hamilton.
‘‘Cabaret is cabaret, but we’ve done all different styles. This is what we believe are the solid gold numbers through the years that never leave people,’’ Davis said.
‘‘All the eras have been adhered to.’’
Artists include Neil Diamond, Tina Turner, Beyonce, and a tribute to Bob Fosse. Genres range from rock and roll to latin.
Cabaret is a form of entertainment originating in Paris in the 1880s.
Davis said the style is rarely seen in Hamilton.
‘‘There isn’t anything like it. Dancers don’t get much opportunity here to get on stage and show what they can do.
‘‘People really love to come and see the talent we have, but sometimes they are overlooked because they are local. In my eyes, they are all super professional.’’
Davis said the adult company includes university law students, doctors, dentists and teachers, volunteering their time to rehearse since May.
The show concept and music compilation have been in development over the past 12 months, with training beginning at the start of the year with fitness and bodyconditioning classes, she said.
Costume and set design have also been a long process, with set construction and costume collation kicking off late last year.
Davis said the company has accumulated a good amount of costumes, but this year decided on new pieces.
‘‘We’ve gone to town on the costuming. We make all of the feather headgear ourselves and all of the costumes over the years have been completely sequined by hand.’’
Davis said it was a thrill to be working on another show after the success of Impact 4 Vegas in 2015. Solid Gold Impact Cabaret, Clarence St Theatre, from Thursday, October 12, to Saturday, October 14. Full buffet dining on Friday and Saturday. Tickets available at Ticketek.
