Prank charges are considered

- PHILLIPA YALDEN

Police are considering laying charges over an end-of-year prank where topless teenage girls rode motorbikes through Hamilton Boys’ High School, hitting and injuring one of the students.

Six senior Waikato Diocesan School for Girls students were involved.

A 17-year-old Hamilton Boys High School student was struck by one of the motorbikes as the girls - wearing underpants, shoes and helmets - rode tandem through the school grounds.

Waikato Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering confirmed police were reviewing footage of the lunchtime antics from a GoPro camera that came loose from one of the girl’s helmets.

He said the six girls rode backto-back in pairs on three motorbikes through the school grounds and on to the sports field amid a large lunchtime crowd of students.

Van de Wetering said the 17-year-old boy was playing soccer with a number of others and did not see the motorbikes coming.

He ran into one of the bikes and suffered a deep wound to the leg and was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he required stitches. He had since been discharged.

Given the manner of driving and injuries to the student, van de Wetering said police were looking at possible charges.

The girl riding the motorbike that struck the teenage boy could be culpable. None of the girls were licensed to drive that type of motorbike.

Hamilton Boys’ High School principal Susan Hassall said the girls’ actions moved beyond a prank.

‘‘If people break the law, then charges should be laid. I think the other school should be treating this very seriously, which I am sure they are.’’
