‘Good Bitches’ launch bake off

- KELLEY TANTAU

There’s nothing quite like comfort food, and Hamilton home bakers are sharing the love.

Good Bitches Baking is a network of people who want to show affection to those in their communities having a tough time.

There are around 100 volunteers in the Hamilton charter, lead by head bitch Sam Higgs, who drop off baked goods to seven organisations around the city.

Higgs, along with Kelly Blake, Erica Douglas, Ruth Moerenhout and Fleur Cook all have specific duties, whether it’s being roster bitch, paparazzi bitch, or fundraising bitch.

And they’ve gotten accustomed to the term now, too.

Formed in Wellington in 2014, Good Bitches spread to Hamilton a year later where they now run a smooth operation - delivering roughly 15 boxes of baking a week.

There are 17 active chapters nationwide totalling almost 1400 volunteers, but volunteers are not required to be experts in the kitchen.

Goods can be either sweet or savoury, as fancy or as rustic as you like.

And, closet bakers needing to get practise in before they commit have an opportunity to perfect their recipes at the upcoming Great GBB Hamilton Bake Off.

Held this Saturday, May 19, home bakers can have their goods tasted by a panel of local chefs and Good Bitches recipients, all the while raising money for the group.

Funds raised goes towards the charity’s running costs, as well as the boxes that deliver the goods.

Winners in the four categories - Cakes, Cookies and Slices, Under 16s, and Professionals - will be announced with a prize-giving following the tastings.

The Great GBB Hamilton Bake Off will be held at Rototuna Primary School Hall, Saturday, May 19. Entries must be submitted by 12.30pm. The fee for each entry is $10. Spectator entry is donation on arrival. To register, email hamilton@gbb.org.nz
