Hastings Leader

Art Deco market a great success

I’ve now experienced my first Art Deco Festival weekend, and it was definitely a bigger and better extravaganza than I expected it to be!

We kicked off things here in Hastings on Thursday with the Harcourts Hastings Madness in the Mall Art Deco Market, which we’ve been working on for weeks at the Hastings City Business Association.

The weather played its part and it was a stunning day with several thousand people visiting the market to get themselves kitted out for the weekend.

It was one of the busiest markets we’ve held so far and it was so satisfying to see it all come together on the day, after a lot of hard work from our team. The market opened at 10am, but we had people with an eye for a bargain shopping even as the stalls were setting up (that might have been me!) and we stayed busy all day, right through until closing. The amazing costumes at the Fashion Flaunt and the performances were definitely a highlight for me. We had Twin City Stompers, Born to Move and Floorless Dance Studios and they were all absolutely amazing in their art deco dancing gear.

I saw them performing throughout the weekend at various festival events so after that busy weekend I hope they are having a well-deserved rest!

Next year we really look forward to holding the Tremains Hamper Auction again, to raise money for the Tremains Community Trust.

So now that deco fever has passed and before I start to think about all the things coming up in the calendar, I’m just going to take a breather and enjoy this perfect summer weather while it lasts and I hope you do too.
