Waihi students explore Northland
Waihi children embarked on a week packed with adventures.
Waihi Central Primary School students set up a Northland base camp at Matauri Bay at Lonsdale Park last week for loads of team bonding activities.
Taking part in a commando course, nature walks, sightseeing to sitting by a campfire to roast marshmallows, were just a few of the activities the year 5 and 6 students have done.
The school says their trip to Cape Reinga, exploring giant kauri forests and sand duning at Te Paki Stream was the highlight of the week.
“We visited the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and made connections with our earlier learning around the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi,” deputy principal Vanessa Maunder says. A trip to Russell on the ferry and an ice cream was an added extra.
“We were so proud of this wonderful group of students who showed Central PRIDE the whole time we were away,” Vanessa said.
The school thanked the Waihi Lions Club, OceanaGold, Carters Contractors, the Lion Foundation and the community for supporting their fundraising.
Vanessa says the school’s scrap metal collection last month was successful.
“We intend to make this a biannual fundraising event. A special thank you to one of our wonderful parents Wendy Harris for her time and organisation for this venture.”
