Young farmers fight for top spot
Young farmers battled it out for two spots into the regional finals at the FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition early this month.
Hosted by the Hauraki Young Farmers Club, 18 competitors from Waikato and Bay of Plenty took on the ‘‘ultimate rural challenge’’ at Ngatea Sale Yards to see which two contestants would progress to the FMG Young Farmer of the Year regional final in 2021.
Events were based around farming tasks and knowledge. Part of the competition included testing the competitors knowledge on fertilisers, fencing, driving motorbikes and tractors, first aid and mental health along with many other key farming areas.
With many competitors it was decided that more testing modules be implemented which resulted in every competitor spending 15 minutes being tested on their skills, knowledge and abilities at 12 different modules with six rest stations throughout.
■ Winners: First place Kieran Mccahon from Hamilton
Young Farmers, second place Edward Roskam from Piarere Young Farmers and third was Harry Phipps from Ngarua Young Farmers.
