Veterans’ golf

On September 28 Waihi experienced a taste of what was to come in the wintry weather bomb predicted to sweep over the country in the next few days, with very strong wind, and cool wintry squalls. Yet 40 people turned up to play a mixed pairs stableford competition regardless of what weather might be in store, and it would be an understatement to say it was not very pleasant. These Vets are a tough lot!

Mixed pairs results: Brian Baynes and Adrienne Lynch 73 points; Nan Hoggard and Gyan Prole 70; Helen Baynes and Allen Sarjant 70; Richard Still and Adele Gunning 69; Andrew Mclennan and Denise Donald 69; Diane Lockwood and John Purkis 67; Earle White and Rae Brown 63; Bob Hoggard and Klara Ingle 61.

Individual stableford: Adrienne Lynch 42 points; Helen Baynes 40; John Purkis 39; Richard Still, Rodger Bagshaw, Nan Hoggard 37; Denise Donald 36; Peter Maria 34; Andrew Mclennan, Gyan Prole, Allen Smith, Avon Gordon, Peter Hewitt, 33; Adele Gunning, Jock Stronach, Willie Lynch, Rae Brown, Edna Connolly, Klara Ingle 32; Earle White, Brian Baynes, Graham Jenkins, John Saunders 31; Eddie Bruce, Allen Sarjant 30.

Nine Hole golf

Three trundlers succumbed to the ferocious south west winds as golfers battled their way along the 9th fairway on Tuesday September 29. It was mayhem on the course, and a wonder that anyone could play golf, let alone stand up in the ferocious wind gusts. Even so, of 17 starters, 12 stayed the distance to finish their stableford competition. (If anyone in Athenree finds a wetweather golf bag cover it belongs to Shelley Lithgow). On the bright side there was very little rain, and then only for about five minutes. Women Waihi Comp STB — Division 1: Lorraine Meyer 17; Glen Bennett 15; Lorraine Morrison 14.

Division 2: Julia Nicolson 20; Shelley Lithgow 15; Mandy Piper 14.

Men TOB Stableford: Rex Smith, John Vautier 17; Terry Paterson, Garth Pritchard 10.
