Waihi Golf report for October 22

The Primor-apata Triple Pairs Challenge 2020

It was a near–perfect weekend in all respects for the 2020 Triple Pairs tournament. The 54-hole nett competition played over two days on October 17/18, consisted of three 18-hole rounds—canadian Foursomes, Scottish Foursomes, and Fourball Best Ball, the combination pairs to be either Men’s pairs, or Mixed pairs. The organizing committee had more than its share of headaches with the uncertainty of Covid-19 and lockdowns: sponsorship was by no means certain with current economic difficulties, the election date was changed to the same weekend, and even worse, All Blacks were unexpectedly scheduled to play Wallabies at Eden Park in the second Blesdisloe Cup test on the last day of the tournament—all contributed to fears that tournament entries would be down. Happily their fears were groundless, and the tournament went without a hitch on the beautifully prepared course—a credit to the greens’ staff.

The shot of the day/week/ month/ century must surely be attributed to Peter Wright in the afternoon foursomes on the first day of the tournament. His partner Rae put the second shot into the left greenside bunker on the 18th hole, and Peter, who normally has no difficulties with bunker play, hit a great shot out on to the roof of the clubhouse, where it ricocheted to just off the 11th green. Rae then hit the approach mid-ships, sending the ball at considerable speed to the other side of her designated green, and Peter with a flourish promptly holed his shot for a five. Howzat?
