Memorial cross to rise again on Martha’s Hill

- Diane Soffe

Waihi Heritage Vision and Tunnellers Company Descendants are rallying the troops to create the impressive ‘‘cross of crosses’’ once again for Waihi’s Martha Hill.

The cross of crosses returns in its third year — featuring 2000 crosses which bear the names of Kiwi soldiers who served in World War I.

The crosses were given by Fields of Remembrance New Zealand to groups across the country including Waihi Heritage Vision.

Oceanagold gave permission for the group to place the crosses on the grassy slope below the Rangitira statue.

The huge cross will take shape over March 15-21 from 10am-12pm daily. Individuals and groups are encouraged to come along and help place the crosses.

Schools are asked to book in a time. The cross will remain in place until a week after Anzac.

On Anzac Day the Tunnelling Company Memorial will have a remembrance event at Gilmour Reserve.

The ceremony has a theme of “the children from our town’’ where stories will be told and people can share their family stories.

There will be an opportunity to lay a wreath, poppy or floral tribute.

This is the last opportunity to share your views and help us shape the next 10 years. Let’s create a better District together.

March 2 was to be a “double comp” day for the 18-hole ladies at Titoki Golf Course, Whangamata.

This was a catch-up day as the course had been closed the previous Tuesday because of inclement weather.

Club members continue to express their gratitude and are in awe of the groundsmen who somehow find a way to restore the course to working order after the flooding that occurs at various intervals on our course.

This week was no exception, and with more rain early in the week, there were some very interesting additional water hazards on numerous holes. With typical laughter, and much joking highlighting ducks, swimming goggles and submarines, play was eventually concluded.

The positive and goodhumoured attitude did nothing to drench the competitive approach of the players, and eventual winners emerged. The prize package for scoring a two that had jackpotted over the previous weeks was shared between four players this week. Congratulations to Jill Thomson, Lynda Evans, Rachel Richardson and Diane Barrance.

Sarah Walker, fresh back from a golf break, won the first round of the Points Cup. She was closely pursued by Bev West and Jill Agnew. The Area Stableford Round 1 points went to Jill Agnew (silver) and Sarah Walker (bronze).

Obviously the break away has agreed with Sarah, who went on to win the stableford

weekly haggle, and so deservedly also earned Player of the Week. What a comeback, Sarah. Very well done. Bev West, Jill Agnew and Rachel Richardson rounded out the top spots for this week’s haggle. We seem to have some name repetition here, so we’ll be looking out for new challengers next week.

The Nearest the Pin and Longest Putt winners were Carolyn Kemp, Celia Brown, Diane Mcgerald, Helen Cashen, Jacquie Hollard and Nancy Gerrand.

Completing the prize list this week were Best Nett of the Month Joanne Somerville and Helen Cashen with Nett 66, and Best Gross of the Month Jill Agnew on 80.

Congratulations to our weekly winners, and many thanks to Social Club Catering, Angela Quinn Hair Stylist, Caci Clinic, Little Latte, Unichem Pharmacy, Meat at the Beach, and Food Express for making these prizes possible.

With steady hands, still heads, smooth backswings and good follow-throughs, we look forward to next week.
