Dance school students get a chance to showcase their skills

-

The year 2021 was another full of disruptions for the 180 students at Whangamata¯ Dance School (WDS) as only one day of five exam days were completed before level 4 Delta lockdown sent everyone back to online learning.

Almost a month to the day after the fact, students were able to sit their exams amid fears of another lockdown on the first day when cases were confirmed in Hauraki.

Luckily things stayed as they were and all students were able to sit their exams with great success. Some 80 per cent of students received a result of 85 per cent or higher, with 64 per cent receiving the top results of Outstanding or Distinction — a fantastic effort by our students, especially under the circumstances.

Special mention to Bella Muir, Maya Cooney, Summer Cunningham and Maddie Airey who were nominated for the prestigious NZ Association of Modern Dance (NZAMD) Scholarship awards in hip hop.

This year WDS is hosting their annual show in a new format — adapting to the times and limitations set out under level 2 guidelines and are taking their show to the big screen! A New Millennium — The Movie will be showing at the War Memorial Hall auditorium on Friday, November 5 and 6.

Audiences are limited to 100 people but multiple screening and prices include a premium seat, complimentary popcorn, ice cream, programmes and an alcoholic beverage option for the adults at the evening screenings. Treat yourself to a special night out and support our very talented local youth, while enjoying the music from 2000-2010.

Tickets are available at Whanga Books — get them quick before they sell out
