FACEBOOK FEEDBACK

- Dam. If only we had a ahead.

The story on our Facebook page headed “Water concerns rising as Ruataniwha aquifer level falls” drew these comments:

● Mike Welsby: Should have collected all the water that went out to sea last week.

● Guy Hammond:

● Altom Tom: I still can’t believe farmers in chb still haven’t built dams to meet thier needs. Where other players do, and their dams are full and ready for the summer ● Anne Butler-Pepping: You just don’t get it! Not all land types are suitable for dams . . . free draining soil equals no water retention. Flat terrain means no run off to fill a dam. And lots of other factors come into it. Ecologically it can be detrimental to build dams all over the place but let’s not allow facts to ruin a good story. Farm dams cannot provide water to the towns. Tell me how orchardists are expected to put in a dam? Lots of fertile FOOD GROWING land would be ruined. Veggie growers are in the same predicament. We do have our farm dams, we would not be able to irrigate from the Ruataniwha dam if it was built and we are still for it to benefit the wider community. Please do not grizzle when your fruit and veggies are staggeringly expensive and say “we can’t afford to buy healthy food”

● Lynne Hutchison: Meanwhile we give away water for free to China, etc . . . ● Axel Alexander: Maybe they should build a dam . . . oh . . . that’s right . . .

The story headed “Kiwibank to bring 50 new jobs to Hastings” drew these comments:

● Shane Kelly: Who uses banks these days? More to the question, who is going to pay for the staff?

● Jennifer Taylor: Are these jobs going to locals, or are they people transferring from other places.
