The story “Family without credit card denied entry to Hawke’s Bay hotel” drew these comments:

Irene De Marco:

● That’s nuts . . . a debit card puts cash into the hotel coffers immediately. A credit card has to be processed and fees charged, and usually takes a day or two for the $$$ to appear in the hotel coffers. Seriously . . . isn’t an instant “cash” payment worth anything these days?

● Most people only have debit cards these days. I have learnt it pays to read the small print about payments.

● Absolutely ridiculous.

● I’ve had this too!! dumb!! Not everyone wants a credit card!!

That really sux for them, bad guests spoil it for good guests. Businesses do have to protect themselves though . . . Pity the headline didn’t read words to the effect “Hawke’s Bay hotel’s generosity in Covid times makes young family’s break all the better”.

● It happened to my wife and I in Auckland. Debit card wasn’t good enough and had to pay cash deposit of one night for each night we stayed. So we had no shopping money. Ended up staying just the one night and went elsewhere.

● Obviously don’t want your business too much. You would think after Covid they would need the money no matter how they are paid. Not everyone has credit cards.

● Most places take Visa Debit. Yes I have had that

happen to me a lot when looking to go on holiday then have to have a credit card to apply for the hotel.

● Yep have had that happen too. Usually I am asked to pay a cash bond on arrival of around $300.

● I am assuming ‘hidden charges’ can be placed on a credit card, not a Visa Debit and that’s why some only do credit cards. I had a credit card but got charged for not using it, so I got rid of it. Dumb anyway.

● That’s terrible. Must be a hotel that’s doing well after lockdown. We had better not hear any sad stories from them if they can turn customers away.

● Hotel in Auckland refused to take our cash or eftpos and demanded a credit card.

● When I book I pay . . .

that’s my worst nightmare.

● Rude I feel for the family.

● Wow look Rochelle, glad you didn’t have this problem in Wellington.

● Most take Visa Debit these days. Come on Scenic, get with the times. Not everyone has a credit card.

● I booked into the #AscotInvercargill with a debit card. Had a great stay, thanks everyone. Xx

● This happened to you two weeks back, exact same story Maxine Veneberg and Natasha Hope.

● A similar thing happened to me in Hamilton, I offered to pay with cash, and was turned away as they would only take credit cards.
