Weaner steer prices down on last year

- Rose Harding

Weaner steer prices were down on 2023 at Tuesday’s second weaner fair of the season at Stortford Lodge.

The sale started strongly but prices fell away as it progressed.

Overall the offering of about 800 head was in top condition although lighter than last year.

This year’s top price of $1040/head was shared by R McDonald, Tutira, for a pen of 274kg angus, and Carpenter Farming, Pakaututu, for a pen of 277kg ang. Last year’s top price was $1220 for a pen of 313kg angus from Punawai Station, Puketitiri.

Agents said the sale was good considering the lack of rain and shortage of feed in Hawke's Bay at the moment.

There were about 800 head on offer to buyers from Hawke's Bay, King Country, Waikato and Manawatu.

SECOND SALE

The second weaner heifer and bull fair was described as a good sale given the conditions.

The approximately 800 heifers and bulls on offer again were in top order. However, the continuing lack of rain is putting pressure on prices.

In the sheep section a small offering of store lambs sold on a par with last week although smaller lambs were harder to sell and several pens were passed in.

Buyers for the cattle and about 1900 sheep were from Hawke's Bay, Waikato, Manawatu and Gisborne. There were also 12 buyers on the online Bidr platform.

PRIME SALE

A shortage of processing space put downward pressure on lamb prices on Monday.

The biggest lambs in a small yarding of 120 lambs of varying quality were passed in.

Agents said meatworks were processing lambs as some farmers were quitting them at lighter weights because of poor store lamb returns.

The ewe sale was better with some quality ewes offered in the yarding of about 600 head.

PRICES Lambs:

Male, $120 to $133; ewe, $125; m/s, $115 to $127.

Ewes: Slipe, heavy, $91; good, $72.50 to $79.50; med, $61, $66. Shorn, heavy, $87.50, $93.

Males: $20 to $5.
