2016 events: Cycling road race. Synopsis: Linked to Operacion Puerto, the Spanish blood doping scandal which began in May 2006. The investigation uncovered doping products, bags of blood and human plasma, code names to top athletes and evidence that illegal transfusions had been administered. Court documents linked Valverde to a bag of human plasma. DNA evidence did the same in 2009 to clinch his fate.
