Boxer dies in ring

- By Simon Plumb

An amateur boxer died on the canvas last night at a charity fight night in Hamilton.

Police confirmed the tragic event late yesterday, saying an individual collapsed at the fundraising event at Te Rapa Racecourse.

The event was organised by Nabby’s Boxing Gym. Dubbed Young Guns 2, it appears many of the fighters were inexperienced.

According to a post made by the gym’s Facebook page in the runup to the event, one of the fighters had only three previous bouts under his belt.

“It was a charity fight night, Our understanding is the fighter collapsed in the ring,” a police spokeswoman told the Herald on Sunday.

“A doctor was on site and an ambulance attended, but they were unable to revive the boxer.”

According to the Boxing New Zealand website the charity event was organised by Dion McNabney.

Attempts to reach McNabney last night were unsuccessful.
