Square sounds Self-described purveyors of“cinematic fantasy jazz with a Mexican different ”, Finn Sc holes and his cohort sa reforging a new sound. The Carnivorou­s Plant Society wind up the first week of Auckland Live’s Summer in the Square at 12.30 pm. Week two features music by DJ Aniwania, Dave Weir, Merk, New Far ben and Echo Ohs. Summer in the Square, Aotea Square until December 23 then from January 9- February 24.

Festive medicine Start the summer holidays with a laugh when an internatio­nallyaccla­imed production of Roald Dahl’ s George’s Marvellous Medicine comes to town for the first time, celebratin­g 100 years since the birth of the world-renowned writer. In this wicked and wonderful classic, George can’t stand his Grandma. She complains all the time, she’s mean and she smells funny. To cure her nastiness, he concocts a spell andi tactually works. George’s Marvellous Medicine, Bruce Mason Centre, Saturday, Dec 17- Tuesday, Dec 22.

Big weekend And while we’ re talking Summer in the Square, next weekend it goes large when passionate young musicians take over. Ignite, a music and events training programme, features performanc­es by Smoke free Rock quest finalists, alternativ­e rock/ blues/ in die bands, funk-driven duos, singer/ songwriter sand special guest LarzRanda. Ignite Weekend, Aotea Square, Saturday, Dec 17 and Sunday, Dec 18 from 12.30pm.

Blonde bombshell Auckland’ s only comic dance troupe, Dy na motion, had a hit on its hand this year with Mi a Blonde in Ice Dagger starring Olivia Ten net as agent 0064. After its winter-times el l-out season, it’ s back paying homage to the birth of the Bond film franchise and skewing stereotype­s with more popping tunes, vintage gems and throbbing anthems than you can shake a ski pole at. The brain of Brine Comedian Alice Brine became a worldwide sensation this year when a post she wrote, likening rape to robbery, went viral. Now the 2016 Billy T nominee returns to Auckland. Buckle up and hold on as she leaves you laughing at things you didn’t know you’d find funny. Alice Brine in Brinestorm, Basement Theatre, Thursday and Friday.
