A NIGHT ON THE TOWN

- Dionne Christian and George Fenwick

DISCO FEVER: Prepare to get your groove on with Auckland’s one and only comedy dance troupe. Dynamotion boogies all the way back to ’79 when the whole world is gripped by disco fever and on the edge of its collective hip-shaking seat to see which country takes out the coveted Disco Championship trophy. With numerous disco dance favourites, re-mixes and rock ballads, this is the show to get you movin’. D.I.S.C.O, Basement Theatre, Tuesday — Saturday, July 29

FLYING VISIT: US hip-hop/electronic producer RL Grime is popping over to New Zealand just ahead of his performance at Australia’s legendary festival Splendour in the Grass. The 26-year-old DJ has made a name for himself with his fresh, sharp beats, riding his way to success after just one album and collaborations with hip-hop greats such as Miguel. RL Grime will be joined in Auckland by Kiwi producers Quix and T1R as well as Australian rapping prodigy Tkay Maidza. RL Grime, Wednesday, Logan Campbell Centre.

MODERN LOVE: It’s a classic love story for our times: Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Boy feels confused. He misses his ex-boyfriend and isn’t sure who he wants to be with. The winner of a Laurence Olivier Award, Mike Bartlett’s comedy is a wicked take on modern love, emotional confusion and the paralysing indecision that comes with having to choose. Theatre stripped back to its bare essentials. Cock, Herald Theatre, Thursday — Saturday, August 12.

RE-STRUNG: Violinist Alina Ibragimova makes a welcome return to the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, playing Bartok’s rhapsodic concerto. Described as a distillation of Hungarian folk music, it’s billed as the perfect foil for her “dazzling” playing. The concert also includes a much-loved favourite: Rossini’s opera William Tell, with the exhilarating gallop that everybody knows. It’s rounded out with Schubert’s Fifth Symphony. APO Bragimova Returns, Auckland Town Hal, Thursday.

MUSIC OF THE SPHERES: Iceland’s auteurs of musical poetry, Sigur Ros, are finally returning to New Zealand, the first time in more than a decade. The trio will delve into their illustrious back catalogue as well as showcase new material, bringing their full production to honour the songs with stunning light displays and intense visuals. The show has received rave reviews all over the world, with critics applauding its grandeur and spectacle. This is sure to be one of the most impressive concerts of 2017. Sigur Ros, Spark Arena, Friday.
