Wallabies star Hunt faces drug possession charge

-

Wallabies star Karmichael Hunt has been charged with drug possession, after allegedly being caught by police with cocaine on a Brisbane roadside.

It is understood Hunt, 31, was arrested with another man about 12.40am yesterday in McLachlan St, Fortitude Valley.

His lawyer Adam Magill confirmed an incident yesterday morning and that his client was arrested.

“An incident involving Karmichael Hunt occurred which resulted in his arrest,” he said. “At this stage, no further instructions have been taken.

“There were two males involved and there was a subsequent charge of possession. They have been charged conjointly.”

A police spokesman confirmed a 31-year-old man had been charged with two counts of drug possession.

Police will allege the men were on the side of the road on McLachlan St.

They were approached after acting suspiciously. The men were detained, searched and released within the hour. They were both given a notice to appear.

Hunt’s court date has been scheduled for January 29.

The other man, 32, was charged with possession of a thing used in regards to a drug offence. The charge is in relation to a mobile phone.

It’s not the first time Hunt, a former NRL and AFL player, has been in trouble for drug offences.

He was fined in 2015 after pleading guilty to four counts of possessing cocaine. Hunt was one of several professional footballers to be caught up in a Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission investigation into a cocaine trafficking ring operating in the state’s southeast. The investigation also led to several Gold Coast Titans players being charged.

Hunt, who made his debut for the Wallabies this year and has played six times for the national team, was also fined $30,000 and suspended for six weeks by the Australian Rugby Union after his 2015 incident.
