A part owner of Marvin Gaye’s is suing Ed Sheeran for US$100 million ($147m) after getting blocked from a similar lawsuit brought by other copyright owners. Both lawsuits say the British songwriter copied parts of the soul classic for his Grammy-winning hit

Canada is announcing billions of dollars in retaliator­y tariffs against the US in response to the Trump Administra­tion’s duties on Canadian steel and aluminium. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government will target items including ketchup and lawn mowers from today.

Shoe-camera explodes

A Wisconsin man’s attempt to take invasive “upskirt” photos was foiled when the battery of his shoe-camera device exploded and injured his foot. Madison police chief Mike Koval said the explosion occurred before the 32-year-old obtained any video so he was counselled and released.

Drifting sunbed ordeal

A terrified Russian tourist has been rescued in Crete after floating for 21 hours on the open sea on an inflatable sunbed that was swept away by a strong current. Medic Olga Kuldo, 55, was saved after a border patrol plane checking for illegal immigrants spotted her more than 11km offshore. After floating through one night and being badly sunburned the following day she needed hospital treatment for exposure and resulting heart problems.

Syrians flee bombings

More than 100,000 Syrians have fled their homes in southwest Deraa province during a massive government offensive aimed at recapturin­g one of the last rebel stronghold­s in the country in what the UN has warned is a humanitari­an “catastroph­e”. At least 98 civilians have been killed in the 10-day operation, said war monitor the Syrian Observator­y for Human Rights, and five medical facilities are out of action.

Migrant boat tragedy

The bodies of three babies were recovered and about 100 people reported missing after a migrant boat sank off the coast of Libya on Friday, survivors and the coastguard said. About 120 migrants were aboard the inflatable dinghy at the time, said survivors brought ashore. Sixteen people were rescued.

55 years for parenticid­e

A Connecticu­t man has been sentenced to 55 years in prison in the fatal shootings of his parents. Kyle Navin had admitted murdering Jeffrey and Jeannette Navin on August 4, 2015. The couple were upset about their son’s behaviour and drug use, and planned to sell their garbage company and cut him out of their wills. Judge Robert Devlin jnr called Navin’s actions “disgracefu­l and disgusting”.
