Waking up to a cracker day

Temperatures in mid-20s forecast for much of the country

- Tom Dillane

With the exception of poor Invercargill and Wellington, the whole of New Zealand is set for “cracker” temperatures topping

20C.

It was a stunning day at Mission Bay yesterday and Aucklanders will awake to another fine sunny morning that will continue into a high of 26C and very little chance of rain.

“For Auckland, certainly in the morning it’s looking great,” MetService meteorologist Sonja Farmer said.

“Out in the Hauraki Gulf you might see an afternoon shower but otherwise 26C, fairly light winds and a good day.”

Almost all other city centres will share those sunny mid-20 temperatures.

Whanga¯ rei and Tauranga are in for a high of 26C with fine weather, while New Plymouth and Palmerston North will hit 25C.

Hamiltonians will sweat it up with a high of 29C.

Yet windy Wellington will only reach 19C with clouds and the chance of patchy drizzle throughout the day.

“Probably the lowest projected forecast temperature tomorrow, out of the main centres, is 19 for Invercargill.

“There are a lot of the temperatures in the early to mid-20s but there are a few that are bouncing up over that as well.”

The South Island will be a little more variable in terms of rain, but most city residents will be able to enjoy a warm sunny day.

Nelson and Dunedin will be fine with 23C and 20C respectively. But Christchurch is in for cloud, patchy drizzle and 21C and Queenstown, on 25C, has the chance of an afternoon shower.
