Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist for female education, was born. On October 9, 2012 Yousafzai and two other girls were shot by a Taliban gunman while travelling on a bus. Yousafzai was critically injured but recovered and in 2014 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
