BENEATH THE SURFACE
Evolution of Surfaces, the New Zealand distributor of Corian® and proud participant in HOME Kitchen Day, on the brand, its heritage and current trends.
Tell us about Corian. NICKY DUGGAN, DIRECTOR OF EVOLUTION OF SURFACES
Corian® is a benchtop product manufactured by DuPont™ since 1967 and is celebrating 50 years of innovative heritage. An advanced blend of two-thirds natural minerals and one-third pure acrylic resin, Corian® is the most recognised Solid Surface brand in New Zealand and worldwide.
Where is Corian® used?
Traditionally used for kitchen benchtops, Corian® is becoming increasingly popular for bathroom vanity tops and basins, and also for laundry benchtops as more homeowners choose consistency of surfaces. Corian® is a super-practical choice for these areas. Standardised Corian® sinks and basins are also available, and many designers create custom options to fit specific spaces. The ‘DUO’ sinks are an elegant yet practical combination of Corian® and stainless steel.
How durable is Corian?
Extremely durable. We know of customers who have had their Corian® benchtops for well over 20 years. With ongoing use Corian® develops its own patina or lustre. It can also be re-buffed to return it to its original surface finish. While we don’t recommend people dancing on Corian® benchtops (however great the party), most damage can usually be repaired on site. It’s also very resistant to stains – substances such as red wine, lemon juice and olive oil that mark other surfaces can be used with confidence. Plus, DuPont™ backs Corian® with a 10-year Residential Installed Transferable Warranty.
What colours are available?
A strong range of colours, patterns and prices, including ‘Solid Whites’, ‘Essentials’, ‘Design Collection’ and ‘Organics’.
What are the current trends?
Colours continue to deepen in intensity and become more moody. Darker palettes which layer up the same or similar shades in different textures and patterns create subtle depth. We are seeing a surge of interest in Corian® ‘Lava Rock’ – a warm grey base with umber and golden veining.
What’s new for Evolution of Surfaces?
We are introducing iB Rubinetti taps to New Zealand. Italian designed and made, they are, quite frankly, absolutely incredible. They will be available from late July.
