A coastal location asks for a relaxed, open approach to design.

-

Were there any design restrictions.

SHANE GEORGE It had to adhere to a footprint on the plans, including the location of the island, and sit comfortably in a living space that contained the dining and living areas

What architectural features needed to be considered? The raked ceiling and the importance of centring the island under the apex of the roofline Also, the large scale of the room, the ceiling height and wall of continuous glass doors

There’s a lot of storage here. Tell us about that. This is a holiday home for a couple and visiting family Its remote location means it’s good to have plenty of storage to save on trips to the store The cabinetry along the back wall conceals a bar that functions as a drinks area, with glass storage above and a fridge below In the same bank of cabinetry, there’s a pantry with benchtop, sink and open shelves It’s a great work centre, with a boiling-water tap for hot drinks, and everyday storage The wood-grain finish looks good when it’s open, but the doors can be closed off to keep the area looking tidy

Did the waterfront setting and light, open-plan layout influence your choice of materials and colour palette?

Yes The taupe-grey and bronzed metallic paint finishes, coupled with leathered granite surfaces, provide a foil to the bright seaside setting The entire room feels calm and warm

What aspect of the kitchen are you most happy with?

I like the symmetry and the way the kitchen sides away down the hallway I also like the blend of materials, which bring a slightly moody feel to the scheme

Tell us about the finish on the panels above the hobs.

This is ‘Metalier’, a metal paint finish that has a fantastic aged patina
