An update on Home of the Year 2018 – and how you can follow the judging process.

the Home of the Year 2018 jury decides our winning home for the year, along with five finalists. It comes at the end of an intense five days of judging: starting in Auckland on February 12, we’ll work away through the country, from Auckland to Hanmer Springs, Taupiri to Akaroa. We were delighted by the number and calibre of entries this year – the most we’ve ever received, and one of the strongest fields. For the first time, we’ve announced 12 shortlisted houses in these pages – a dozen peeks at some of the country’s best residential architecture, thanks to the generous support of our longterm sponsor, Altherm Window Systems.

As with previous years, Home of the Year 2018 has four categories: Small, Multi-Unit, Retreat and City. Each different context and typology comes with its own peculiar demands and challenges. Although, when the jury is judging it’s less about category and about architecture: our finalist homes are simply the best houses we see on the trip.

From there, the HOME team flies into action, photographing the six winning homes, interviewing the architects,

laying up our biggest issue of the year and producing some beautiful video content. In late March, we’ll announce the finalists and then, on March 28, we announce the winner just before the issue goes on sale.
