A North Canterbury winery estate celebrates local talent
Perfectly positioned in the Waipara Valley, Black Estate sits long and low in the landscape; grape vines stretching in one direction, undulating hills in the other. Richard Naish of RTA Studio designed the elegantly spare black building that houses a tasting room, restaurant and B&B. “It’s a beautiful, peaceful place and it’s such a thrill to share it with guests,” says Black Estate’s Pen Naish. “You can have lunch and then stroll down the hill to your room for a siesta.” You’ve furnished the guest house with pieces made by friends? Our friend Joska from Joska & Sons in Lyttelton made the cabinet and desk, while our friend and artist Wayne Youle’s painting adds contentment. There are linen throws from Lordship Linens and rugs from Klippan, and Thonet helped us out with the Artek tables and stools. Simon James armchairs complete a good story of New Zealand design. What’s it like when everyone goes home? After the tractor is parked and the restaurant closes at 5pm, you can enjoy the soft sun, the quiet and maybe the stars. You might even spot the oneeared hare make his evening hop across every vine row from north to south. What’s for breakfast? It’s light and local with Rachel Scott sourdough, Black Estate jam made with wild or local fruit, organic house-made muesli, Coffee Supreme and a selection of fine teas. What’s in the mini bar? Wine Brew Moon and Three Boys beer, organic milk and apple juice, Rachel Scott chocolates and Black Addiction hand-cut liquorice. Guests can also choose takeaway options from the dinner and snacks menu of our award-winning restaurant.
