Accessed through an avenue of trees and native bush, they were instantly smitten by the property. Drawn into a pool of sunshine, their breath was taken away by the incredible views, the peace and privacy, the prolific birdlife, and the beautiful character home.
Both self-proclaimed foodies, they were drawn to the allure of a slower-paced life. Their dream of owning a piece of land to cultivate and live sustainably became a reality when they stumbled upon this property. “We found this place, and it really ticked all the boxes for us”, says Kate.
While it looks as if it’s been there forever, the homestead started life in Gillies Avenue, Newmarket and is still going strong thanks to its Kauri construction and careful nurturing. It is brim-full of special features and cosy niches. The rear veranda is a drawcard for evening tranquillity, sunsets, and ever changing views. The huge garden bath is a fantastic spot for stargazing while listening to the call of kiwis, and the kitchen is full of charm. Living off the land has been a central theme for Gareth and Kate, who have planted orchards with heritage fruit varieties and tended to bountiful vegetable gardens. They’ve embraced a sustainable lifestyle, raising animals with care and even delving into the art of butchery. Their connection to the land is palpable, creating a haven where the fruits of their labour are savoured in every aspect of life.

However, as Gareth and Kate look towards the future, they reluctantly decide to part with their changes in priorities call for a more travel-friendly residence, yet the essence of a vibrant rural lifestyle remains at the core of their desires. “It will be a huge wrench passing this place on, but we know someone out there will love it as much as we have”,Gareth expresses.
