Basketball team success

- By MARY O’NEILL

Last Friday, three Levin Intermediate basketball teams competed at the Horowhenua events centre against a fierce competition.

This tournament signalled the end of the Horowhenua junior basketball season, which has run over the last few months on Thursday evenings.

Each team had been placed in a pool in which they would play two games before qualifying for finals. LIS 1 (boys) stepped up to the challenge and took out their pool to take their position in the semi-final.

Both LIS boys teams had been affected by a Rugby 7s tournament in Porirua which took some key players away, but the boys rallied and worked together to fix gaps in their play.

The boys won their semi against a mixed St Joseph’s team and made it into the final.

Once again the final was against Fairfield — for the past few years this has been the case. Both teams played very well and were neck and neck throughout the first half. There was some good play with Lewis and Carter driving the ball into the hoop and making lay-ups.

The boys came out with the title winning 18-27 in the end.

The LIS girls teams played hard but were pipped in the final minutes of their game against a mixed St Joseph’s team.

This still placed the girls in their final as there were only two full girls’ teams.

The girls won their games comfortably against O¯ hau (twice) and were to meet them again in the final.

O¯ hau girls played an exceptional first half and stepped up their game, laying down a challenge.

Two new players (Feiloaki and Summah) stepped up in the final making rebounds and shots throughout the game.

But with consistent short-range jumpshots and layups from Ngapera, Maraea and Peara the girls came out with the trophy in the end.
