F word feminism not to be feared

-

There aren’t enough words in the English language to account for all of the things that women are ‘not enough’ of, says award-winning columnist, musician and activist Lizzie Marvelly in her first-person work, That F Word: Growing up Feminist in Aotearoa.

In That F Word, Marvelly tells the story of New Zealand’s feminist roots, examines our gender imbalances, challenges the traditional expectations in New Zealand society and celebrates the indomitable spirit of Kiwi women.

There are some things, Marvelly says, that are worth getting angry about.

We ask Marvelly some questions:

In a nutshell, what is The F Word about?

It’s about women in Aotearoa. It’s a bit like a much-longer column; part discussion of issues, part manifesto and part autobiographical story-telling.

What is the biggest myth surrounding feminism?

That it basically boils down to hating men. Feminism is about equality, not manhating, but that often gets lost in the noise.

What was your favourite chapter to write?

Probably the one on fairytales. That was a lot of fun to write.

You tackle some big issues in the book, is it hard to share your experiences so publicly?

Yes, undoubtedly. I was used to sharing some personal stories in my column, my music and on social media, but writing the book took that to a whole new level. I decided that it was worth the discomfort though if I could help to reduce shame and stigma.

What do you want young women to take away from the book?

That being a young woman with an opinion shouldn’t be out of the ordinary. And that their opinions are just as worthy and valid as anyone else’s.

What can people of all genders do to work towards gender equality in New Zealand?

All sorts of things. Acknowledge that gender inequality exists, speak out against sexism, make sure that women are heard, respected and supported, join a protest for women’s rights, donate to charities for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, advocate for gender-blind hiring practices, implement gender quotas around board tables . . . the list is endless.

Who are your role models?

Helen Clark, Kate Sheppard, Meri Te Tai Mangakahia, Whina Cooper . . . people who’ve made a real difference. In New Zealand I think we’re lucky to have so many strong wa¯ hine to admire.

What is next for you?

I’m currently in the middle of making a documentary for Ma¯ ori Television, so finishing that is first up. Then getting back into some music for a few upcoming performances. Then Christmas with my family. The rest of the year is pretty jam-packed, so I’m already looking forward to heading home to Rotorua for a summer holiday!
