Discussions on their future careers
Students at Waiopehu College are busy enjoying a series of interviews and discussions focusing on their next steps and career pathways.
Our Futures Interviews, held on Thursday, September 20, gave all Year 10 to 12 students and their families an opportunity to meet with a member of staff and choose their preferred subject options for 2019.
In addition, our Year 13 students and families joined teachers to discuss their transition plans once they leave school.
Election fever is currently gripping the students at Waiopehu as five students — Dorien Atutahi-Walker, Jazmine Budd, Josh McCartney, George Edwards and Charli Robinson — presented to the whole school last week, vying for a place as Student Representative on the Board of Trustees for 2019.
This election is a legal process and is carried out annually at this time of year.
Voting is now open and will remain open until midday today.
This position is an extremely important role in the school and gives the elected student the responsibility of representing the views of others in the student body at the governance level.
Our senior students are all focused on NCEA assessments as we move into the business end of the year.
There are only just over four school weeks left until external examinations start and we are all working hard, staff and students alike, to ensure everyone is as prepared as possible.
Passing exams or achieving in an internal assessment is nothing to do with luck — it is all about proper prior preparation.
We will be maintaining our teaching and tutorials programme throughout the examination period through to the end of November to ensure all are as prepared as possible.
I am delighted to report that our Boys’ Barbershop Group, Minor Setback performed this week in the Barbershop National Finals which has been taking place in Tauranga.
They were up against the very best schools in New Zealand and managed to achieve fifth place, which is an outstanding achievement.
They were only six points off a third place finish which demonstrates how closely matched the top ensembles were.
We are all thrilled for them and for their inspirational Head of Music, Tim Shirriffs. Well done to all!
