Flax work making progress at Hub

-

Greenheart Hub volunteers are making great progress on their harakeke work in Foxton and the trust is delighted to report a commercial sewing machine has been donated.

“Greg Pond, a Lions Member, generously donated the sewing machine.

“We are very grateful for this donation,” said Trust coordinator Amba Wright.

She said fixing up the space at the Foxton Racecourse, destined to become an art recycling centre, is progressing.

“We are hoping to open the doors within the next few months.”

She said more volunteers are needed to help at the Foxton river loop walk Harakeke work bee.

“If you could spare some time to help, even if it is outside of the organised time of Friday afternoons, many hands make light work.”

The Trust now has reusable fruit and vege bags for sale at $10 for a set of five as well as dog leads made from recycled plastic bags.

They come in a number of colours and cost $30. Contact 0276008638.

Trustee profile

Hi, I am Sherilyn Bury Vilela.

I moved to Foxton Beach when I bought my home here almost five years ago and continue to work for fashion designers in the New Zealand clothing industry.

More recently I have lent my hands to helping to create the SEA Gallery on Seabury Ave.

I also study part time doing a Diploma in Creativity, finding inspiration from my surroundings and items I collect from the environment to create sculptures and photography as well as using fabric scraps from my work to integrate into sculptures and collage.

When the Greenheart Hub Trust was founded I was keen to get involved with its mission to recycle, re purpose and inspire the community of the benefits of being resourceful with the discarded products of our wasteful society.

The clothing industry makes up a large proportion of what goes into landfill as does so much of what we quickly tire from, so minimising and being creative with what we discard locally will go a long way to making our town an inspirational place to live.

Greenheart Hub Trust has big ambitions to revitalise the Tote Building at the Foxton racecourse with a heart to making it a vibrant and welcoming hub for all ages within the local community, to educate, create and be inspired.

I see it as an exciting time, a great opportunity and an initiative I am proud to be a part of.
