Top brass will set toes tapping

Enjoy an afternoon of brass music presented by top brass bands from the lower North Island, on Sunday March 28. Ka¯piti Brass will open the programme at 11.30am and perform for an hour with a set of brass band music and popular entertainm­ent numbers. A mixture of toe-tapping arrangemen­ts sure to suit all in attendance. Kapiti band will open its musical “set” with the historical Salvation Army Brass Band March Star Lake by Eric Ball. Featured in their programme will be Can you Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King, Candle in the Wind by Elton John, Hine e Hine, the traditiona­l New Zealand melody, and from the musical Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Old Gumbie Cat and Skimblesha­nks: The Railway Cat.

At 12.30pm host band Levin and Districts Brass will take the stage and entertain the crowd with their selection of popular brass music. Conductor Colin Honey has selected a varied programme featuring soloists and full sections of the band. Levin and Districts Brass is currently a mixture of youth and maturity and will present an hour of traditiona­l brass music. Featured items include New York, New York, Stranger On The Shore, Ain‘t Misbehavin, and Anything Goes. A highlight will be the band‘s final number Dargaville Town March by New Zealand composer John Gibbons.

This is John‘s 50th Brass Band March he has composed and he is travelling to the event to hear his compositio­n performed.

The third brass band for the afternoon will the Feilding Brass Band playing at 1.30pm. The Feilding band will feature at Brass in the Park for the third time after their highly successful debut two years ago.

Feilding conductor Carissa Davies has chosen a wide ranging selection of music, sure to entertain.

Featured pieces include numbers by NZ band Crowded

House, the popular song Havana, Rehad, and the 80s pop hit Come On Eileen.

At 2.30pm the final band for the afternoon will take the stage, Hawera Brass from Taranaki appearing at Brass In The Park for the first time. Musical Director Karl Anderson has selected a programme of both traditiona­l and modern “brassy” music featuring such numbers as Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Life On Mars, Queen’s Greatest Hits and a James Bond collection.

The event is on wet or fine. If wet, the concernt will be held at the Salvation Army Worship and Community Centre, 11 Durham St, Levin, from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.
