Foxton premiers victorious at home
Under sunny conditions and after a transfer to Victoria Park in Foxton, the Foxton premieres gained a deserved win at home. Waikanae player Clayton Winiata reached a milestone as he played his 150th game for his club.
Foxton's new first fiveeighth Jahlon Governor opened the ledger on the scoreboard with a penalty, and after some fine midfield play moments later he managed to cross the chalk to have the locals up 10-0.
Waikanae edged their way back into the game with a try of their own, with domination on an even plane with Foxton leading 10-5 at halftime.
Foxton coach Nick McVeigh's halftime comment was: “With the rucks and mauls we've initially won that battle. We just have to be clean. Get up in their faces in the second half, and keep putting them under pressure.
“It's the fitness level, we're better this week, we've still got a bit of a way to go, however, we've just got to work at it. In the last twenty we sort of lost our way a bit. Just keep those combos going.”
Waikanae coach Simon Fifield's halftime observation was: “I was really impressed with their attack. Our shape allows us to spread their defence wide on attack, and open up holes. We just have to have faith and wear them down, more holes will appear.
“We just have to keep what we're doing and attack. Just push up a little harder. They have some very big players, we have to keep getting up in their faces more. Apart from that I'm pretty happy with their performance.”
Foxton continued their momentum and started to dominate, not without regular contention from Waikanae. However, Foxton managed two quick tries from clever play from their midfield backs. Although Waikanae edged closer on the score sheet it was too little too late, Foxton winning comfortably by 29-19.
