Foxton apprentice jockey reaches another milestone
By winning race 8 at the Woodville races recently aboard Foxton galloper Maduro, Foxton apprentice jockey Temyia Taiaroa reached another milestone by losing her 3 kilo claim and reducing it to a 2 kilo claim.
After riding 42 winners thus far in her career, and halfway through her
apprenticeship, Temyia said, “It still feels the same as before, however, I get a lot more opportunities now, and I have to keep improving with my style.
“Claiming a 2 kilo allowance now and going into winter it’s going to be a lot harder in gaining rides.
“From another aspect, it’s pleasing that more northern trainers are now
contacting me to be booked to ride their horses.
“This is due to winning on Luna Perfecta for Cambridge trainer Mark Forbes, this has expanded my connections in that light.
“I’m pleased for trainer Matt Dixon that I could win on Maduro for him, I guess you can put this down to a good trainer, horse and rider combination,”
Taiaroa said.
“I don’t have any goals, I just take each day as it comes.
“Originally I wanted to be a jockey to follow in my Koro’s footsteps and my father Evan’s, who was an apprentice jockey and now holds an amateur jockey’s licence. This is why it’s always been my ambition,” Temyia said.
Trainer Matt Dixon said, “I’m pleased for Temyia getting the win as she has had a good association with the horse now riding him for two seconds and now the win.
“Maduro will now go to Woodville again for the Woodville Cup over the distance of 1600m and then go out for a spell over the winter months,” Dixon said.
