“Akitchen needs to be functional, now and remain so well into the future, and that is more important than how it looks,” said award winning kitchen designer Nicoa Ross.

After 23 years in Palmerston North and spending 15 years honing her skills designing for large companies, she has set up her own kitchen design business in Foxton.

She and her family made the move to Foxton and to her own design business in the middle of the pandemic. She has designed thousands of kitchens situated right around the country in her career and had spotted a gap in the market, working on small or large projects for any budget.

She is a certified kitchen designer but can design other interior parts of the house as well, and even your garage. She has done a number of full house fit outs.

“I offer an independent design service which focusses on what works for the client. I realised there was a gap in the market for good design for all budgets. I can take an existing kitchen plan and change it to make it work for each client.

“Any joiner can use my designs. I do not use standard sizes, everything is custom-made. My design is tailored to how each person or family use each space.”

She charges for her design services at $100/hour. If needed Nicola can take charge of the entire process for you from design to fit-out, as she has excellent contacts with manufacturers, suppliers, and tradies.

“I look at how your life can be

made easier through the design of a space. I discuss with clients how they use a space, and make them think about how they may be using it in 15 years’ time. Function is more important than how it looks. After all you use the kitchen every day and it has to work for you.”

She is based in the old Noel Walls newsagents building, 82 Main St, which has had a substantial makeover, since she bought it.

Nicola said she started her working life doing all sorts of jobs until a kitchen design job grabbed her fancy. She became a certified kitchen designer, and after 15 years is skilled enough to mentor younger desingers and to be the chairwoman of the Wellington and Central Districts Chapter of the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association — NZ (NKBA).

Among her awards are: NKBA Excellence in Design Awards for spatial innovative design residential, Trends international design awards bathroom highly commended and overall winner for powder room in the same awards.
