Electra, a proud Principal Sponsor of the Electra Business & Innovation Awards since its inception

-

Electra continues to be a proud supporter of the region’s Business and Innovation Awards. The pride we have in these awards has seen us as a principal sponsor since its inception in 1993. To us, the Awards are a celebration of what makes this a great place to live, play, work and invest in.

The awards are a journey starting with nominations and entries, that culminate with one amazing night that showcases and celebrates Horowhenua and Kapiti’s best emerging, established, and innovative businesses and businesspeople.

It is pleasing to see more entries and finalists in this year’s awards due, in part, to the support of Councils which has allowed businesses to enter at no cost.

Businesses face many challenges and achievements as they grow and develop. I wonder if the leaders who established what is now Electra thought we would still be here and supporting our local community with power over 100 years since establishment. Some of the key milestones for Electra are:

• 1914 Mangahao power report says site is viable for a large hydro powerstation

• 1915 Construction of the dams and power house begins • Feb 1922 The first Horowhenua Electricity Power Board was elected

• 1923 Shannon delivered electricity from coal-fired plant in Mangaore

To celebrate our centenary this year we have a number of events and activities planned which you will hear more about soon.

Electra is hosting the top linesmen from across NZ in The Connexis Linesman Games – which demonstrate excellence in all things power and lines. These games are being held at the AP&I Showgrounds in Levin from 27th – 29th September and I would like to extend an invitation to you all to come along and watch. These are the best of the best at building and maintaining the power networks in New Zealand
