Levin East School board appoints new principal

The Levin East School Board of Trustees is delighted to announce that Sarah McCord has been appointed as the new principal at our school.

Board chair/presiding member Sean Turner said: “The board was pleased with the number and quality of applicants and we look forward to Sarah taking the helm as principal at the start of Term 1, 2023 following the retirement of principal Rikki Sheterline at the end of this 2022 school year.”

Sarah is an experience­d teacher and principal.

After attending Dunedin College of Education and Otago University to complete a Bachelor of Education in the mid-1990s, Sarah began her teaching career in a two-teacher school in North Canterbury.

Moving to Palmerston North in 1996, Sarah taught in schools in Palmerston North before becoming a deputy principal in Feilding.

Sarah first took the principal reins at Kaitoke School near Whanganui in 2011, before moving to her current school, Ruahine School near Dannevirke, at the start of 2018. Sarah is also currently the lead principal of the Tamaki nui-a¯-Rua Kahui Ako (Dannevirke Community of Learning). Five years ago, Sarah completed a masters of education at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington.

Sarah has a real passion for literacy and the arts. She has led choirs for many years, has taught Reading Recovery and is heavily involved in literacy education. Currently the president of the New Zealand Literacy Associatio­n, Sarah has also been involved in writing books for young Māori and Pasifika learners.

Sarah is passionate about creating learning environmen­ts where students and staff are happy, engaged and aspiring to be the best they can be.
