Horowhenua Chronicle

Sam Ferguson Horizons Regional Council

-

Frequent trains and buses are one step closer now that Horizons Regional Council have adopted their 10 year transport plan.

As a Horowhenua representative and chair of the passenger transport committee at Horizons, I have been instrumental in ensuring the region has a transport plan that will deliver the level of public transport that we need.

My vision is that people living in the Horowhenua have a viable option of catching trains and buses to get around. A vision where people don’t need a car for all of their trips.

The regional plan and approach is more than just looking at connections to our local towns, it is an opportunity to look at the bigger picture and how frequent connections from Waikanae railway station to Dannevirke can also meet the needs of Levin and Shannon. Or how frequent connections from Waikanae to Whanganui can deliver great transport outcomes for Levin and Foxton as well.

I will continue to advocate strongly to ensure we get more frequent trains heading north and south. One train a day is not enough and our community deserves more. This continues to be a priority for me.

Alongside strong transport advocacy I have been busy supporting increased investment in Foxton Beach and Waitarere Beach pest animal and plant control along with supporting key wetland projects that will help improve the quality of our freshwater.

Lake Horowhenua is an important priority for me and I have strong involvement in the Arawhata wetland which will help improve the health of our lake.

My commitment to the Horowhenua: a vote for me is a vote for public transport, waterways, and strong action on climate change. I have a proven record in these areas and will continue to advocate at every opportunity I have.
