Through a personalised and focused teaching process, our students develop the tools they need for ongoing success.

One of the highlights for us at HLC/LTTM is to celebrate the life changing success of our students. We would like to offer our congratulations to Kyle Lang for being officially accepted to begin his journey as a career firefighter.

We are proud to share that Kyle starts training at the national training centre in Rotorua this month.

Kyle has been working with one of HLC/LTTM’s literacy and numeracy tutors, Karen McAviney, to support and assist in the process.

“Tutoring with Karen improved my ability to understand and prepare me for the process of becoming a firefighter and achieving my goal,” Kyle said.

Karen mapped out a bespoke training plan to meet Kyle’s needs.

His literacy and numeracy journey began because he wanted to enter the NZ Fire service. The entry requirements for the serve cover a number of tests.

■ 1 A cognitive reasoning test

■ 2 Fitness test

■ 3 A 5-minute oral presentation

■ 4 Problem solving activities including working as part of a team to solve problems

■ 5 Formal interview. The cognitive reasoning test requires that the candidate answer 12 questions covering a variety of subjects that require critical reading skills, numerical skills, and patterns requiring cognitive and logical reasoning skills, all under time pressure.

Reading strategies such as identifying key words and phrases in questions, scanning text for the key words in order to find solutions; reading and recalling detail were used to improve Kyle’s ability to find solutions quickly without having to read all the text.

Listening skills were used to improve Kyle’s listening for key words and identifying solutions from the clues given in the text.

Mathematical strategies involved working on concepts such as fractions, decimals and percentages and how they are inter-related and how to apply them to solve a range of problems.

The concepts of ratio and probability were used to improve Kyle’s cognitive and logical reasoning skills.

The programme also develops speech writing, how to structure a presentation, the use of the white board as part of the presentation and how to use cue cards.

The last part of the programme involves interview skills; how to prepare for the interview, the types of questions that may be asked, how to answer questions and preparing questions to ask the interview panel as well as practise answering questions.

Kia Kaha Kyle, we will all be following your journey and looking forward to your graduation upon successful completion of your 12-week recruit course.
