Students win top awards in STEM and barbershop
Kia ora Koutou talofa lava, greeting everyone. I am delighted to share that one of our students, Georgia Cruse, was selected as a 2022 Girl Boss Award winner.
She was selected from more than 455 nominations across New Zealand which is a huge credit to both herself and Waiopehu College.
At only a 4 per cent acceptance rate it is the most selective awards scheme in the country.
That’s even more selective than Harvard University.
As part of her win, Georgia and her mum were flown to Auckland to attend a VIP winners’ lunch.
That was followed by an awards ceremony at the
Northern Club in central Auckland.
This event was attended by 130 dignitaries and business leaders including Georgia’s award sponsors Orion and Connetics who flew from Christchurch to help Georgia celebrate.
Georgia won the award for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics). To win the award she had to demonstrate her expertise in this field, and how she is helping to bridge the gap between males and females in this area.
On September 22, the Waiopehu College Barbershop Chorus travelled to Palmerston North to compete in the National Young Singers in Harmony barbershop competition.
After enjoying the morning’s choruses, they performed two songs
and
in front of the other colleges from all over the country.
There were two other groups in this category (Mixed Voices), Aotea College and Ka¯ piti College, and to our delight the Waiopehu College Barbershop Chorus won.
This group is made up of mostly junior students and is the first time the Barbershop Chorus has competed at the national competition, so the future is looking bright for barbershop at Waiopehu College.
I’d like to take this opportunity to wish our senior students all the best as they begin their NCEA exams next week.
