More digital opportunities to be promoted by library
We live in an increasingly digital world, which is constantly changing. From social connections, to information, to goods and services and even essential services (to name a few), all of these elements of our lives are requiring increased digital literacy. Digital equity and inclusion is about ensuring all people have what they need to contribute to, benefit from and participate in the digital world. Digital equity and inclusion is a human right.
Part of my role as the Digital Inclusion Co-ordinator for Libraries Horowhenua is to facilitate and deliver our digital learning programming. This is core library programming and services that seek to support our community with their digital literacy and skills, and provide education and the chance to learn and upskill. It’s been absolutely delightful for me to be able to build this programming back up over these last couple of months, as it had been on long, Covidy pause. I’ve had the joy of teaching six of our Better Digital Futures mini courses both in the library and out in our community, resuming our monthly Digital Drop In sessions, connecting with people through our Book a Librarian 1:1 help service, delivering Skinny JUMP and
overseeing our eLibrary platforms.
We have programming at various levels, to meet peoples differing needs:
Better Digital Futures — four-week mini courses that cover everything from the basics, to using apps, to digital safety, how to choose a device.
Standalone classes — twohour sessions on things like digital banking and using our eLibrary.
Book a Librarian — bookable 1:1 help with a friendly librarian.
Digital Drop-ins — monthly drop-in sessions for all your questions and queries.
Skinny JUMP
All of our classes and services are free. Our final Better Digital Futures class for the year is Digital Apps and starts on Monday, November 28, 1pm @ Te Takeretanga o
Kura-hau-po¯ . For more info or to register: https://diaa.arlo.co/ w/courses/335-digital-appspathway/18695
Next month on Wednesday, December 14, we will be honoured to host author and national cyber security expert John Parsons, for two public talks on Internet Health, Safety and Wellbeing. These will be at Te Takeretanga o Kura-haupo¯ , and are free. There’s two sessions, one aimed at the needs of older adults and seniors, at 10.30am-12pm. The second session is aimed at the needs of parents and guardians who may want guidance on how to navigate the digital world with their child/children. This session will be at 5.30pm-7pm.
