Tokoroa on top in big tournament
The full house sign went up as Levin Cosmopolitan club hosted the latest North Island Chartered club outdoor bowls tournament last week, attracting 208 players from around the North Island.
There was little to no accommodation left in town all week as teams from Kamo to Johnsonville came to play. The weather was fine for a full four days of bowls and players were said to have enjoyed the hospitality of the Horowhenua.
Mayor Bernie Wanden opened the tournament on Sunday and play started the next day at Central Levin
Bowling Club and Levin Bowling Club. After two days of section play the 52 teams were divided into top 16 qualifiers — who went into the main Cup event — the next 16 into the plate and the rest into the consolation event.
Sections of four contested the Cup
and the plate with competition fierce for the trophies and prize money. The consolation contested over two days was played over four games.
Semifinals and finals were played on Thursday with the team from Tokoroa coming out the Cup winners defeating St Johns from Whanganui
18-4. The plate event was a closer result with Ohope taking the spoils by 21-13. In the consolation it was the Taupo team who reigned supreme defeating Ohope 8-2.
The local Levin Cossie team of Dot Collis(s), Jen Watt, Viv Hudson and Jen Watt finished with8/9 wins, only
losing to the winners on the final day. This put them in sixth place out of 52 teams.
Thanks must go to Levin Cossie club, Roz in real estate, Jan Sparrow, and Muzzy Print for support of the event and to the two bowling clubs for their great hospitality.
