- By ANDREA O’NEIL

The Porirua Vikings are on the top of the club rugby league table after beating Te Aroha Eels 15-10 on Saturday afternoon, helped by Randwick thrashing Wainuiomata, 22-10.

Despite a blood- chilling southerly against them at Te Whiti Park, the action started early for the Vikings with two tries in the first half by Nooroa Akavi and Tyson Tamakaha.

The Eels drew level after halftime but the match was decided by a second Akavi try and an Anton Wereta field goal at the blow of the whistle.

Porirua is on 11 points with Wainui nipping at their heels on 10, Randwick on 9, and Te Aroha on 8.

Upper Hutt overcame Petone 26-20 to give the Tigers a 6 on the scoreboard, level with University who defeated St George by the same margin. The Panthers now sit at 4 and St George bringing up the rear with 2.

Next Saturday the Vikings face the Hunters and the Dragons battle the Panthers, both at home, from 2.30pm.
