Vik­ings wield axe

The Porirua Vik­ings are on the top of the club rugby league ta­ble af­ter beat­ing Te Aroha Eels 15-10 on Satur­day af­ter­noon, helped by Rand­wick thrash­ing Wainuiomata, 22-10.

De­spite a blood- chill­ing southerly against them at Te Whiti Park, the ac­tion started early for the Vik­ings with two tries in the first half by Nooroa Akavi and Tyson Ta­makaha.

The Eels drew level af­ter half­time but the match was de­cided by a sec­ond Akavi try and an An­ton Wereta field goal at the blow of the whis­tle.

Porirua is on 11 points with Wainui nip­ping at their heels on 10, Rand­wick on 9, and Te Aroha on 8.

Up­per Hutt over­came Pe­tone 26-20 to give the Tigers a 6 on the score­board, level with Univer­sity who de­feated St Ge­orge by the same mar­gin. The Pan­thers now sit at 4 and St Ge­orge bring­ing up the rear with 2.

Next Satur­day the Vik­ings face the Hunters and the Dragons bat­tle the Pan­thers, both at home, from 2.30pm.

Fly­ing start: The Vik­ings took the lead early against Te Aroha on Satur­day with this Nooroa Akavi try, but the game was not se­cured un­til a last minute field goal from An­ton Wereta.
