Rugby club on the rise

- By KRIS DANDO

The rugby season is well and truly over but Tawa RFC are already looking towards 2013 with relish.

Club captain Allan Davidson says the club is in good heart, able to reflect on excellent results on the field and plenty of supporters attending the first team’s games, home and away.

The presidents and under- 85s were ‘‘always competitive’’ in their respective grades, making semifinals, as did the senior firsts, while the top side’s spirited run in Swindale Shield and Jubilee Cup play was great for the club, Davidson says.

The icing on the cake was the Colts’ winning the division two Vic Calcinai Cup, which bodes well for the under-21 players coming through. Senior Moli and Michael Finau did a superb job as coaches, Davidson says.

‘‘Everyone’s absolutely rapt with the season when you look at the overall picture, the support for our teams is better than it’s ever been. The Colts had a top year all the way through and it’s now important that we keep these guys in the club.’’

He hopes there might be a senior third team in 2013.

Steve So’oialo, who was an inspirational player on the park for the first team, is also likely to be reinstated as their coach for next season.

Tawa RFC’s annual general meeting is on this Friday from 7.30pm at the clubrooms at Lyndhurst Park.
