Bay fair an all-round hit
Titahi Bay’s first community fair was a blazing success, say organisers, with the sun coming to the party on December 9.
‘‘It was really fantastic. It was amazing. It was hot and sunny, the weather was great. People just came out,’’ organiser ’ Ana Coffey said. ‘‘The best part for me was just seeing the community turn out, the community loving being together and people connecting.’’
About 500 people visited the fair at Whitehouse Rd shops, which boasted food and craft stalls, music, activities for kids and the chance to contribute to the suburb’s village plan review.
Ms Coffey and fellow Porirua City councillor Ken Douglas collected residents’ views on the Bay as part of a village plan review.
People could write things they loved about Titahi Bay on bits of heart- shaped plastic, which were then attached to a fence.
Common themes were a love of the beach, the surf and the community, and many kids said they loved their schools, Ms Coffey said.
‘‘It just shows that it’s about the community and about our natural environment,’’ she says. ‘‘One person wrote ‘I love the community constable’, but it was his wife, so that’s okay.’’
The fair will happen again next year, Ms Coffey says. ‘‘ It will definitely become a fixture on the Titahi Bay calendar.’’
Titahi Bay Bakery manager Keith Cam says he did four times as much business as usual, and had sold out of food by 12.30pm.
‘‘It was amazing, we’re never that busy. We didn’t expect it.’’
