Pak’nsave tops market survey

- By KRIS DANDO

Porirua Pak’nSave was a comfortable winner of the annual Kapi- Mana News supermarket comparison.

We collated a list of everyday shopping items, and took it to the two Countdown and two New World stores in Porirua and Tawa, plus Pak’nSave.

We also added Bedford St Four Square for variety and substituted mince and a small block of cheese with equivalent items.

The survey was carried out last Wednesday. No store owners were aware we were visiting.

Pak’nSave general manager Garrod Brader was pleased with the outcome, which he said backed up the store’s claim to be one of the cheapest supermarkets in New Zealand.

He said Porirua had one of the most competitive supermarket environments in the country.

Plenty of factors went into its ability to give customers value for money, he said.

He held daily meetings with his section managers to review prices.

‘‘We employ buyers to get the best deals and then deliver those savings to our community. We’re very active,’’ he said.

Mr Brader said the Countdown chain ran a national pricing programme and he kept aware of competitors’ prices.
