RSA stalwarts honoured

- By ANDREA O’NEIL

Porirua RSA foundation members John Thomas and Jock McCulloch, both 91, were given life memberships to the club last month.

The men helped to build the original RSA in Porirua’s CBD 50 years ago and had been strong supporters of the club ever since, vice-president John Hannan said.

Life memberships were not given out lightly and Mr Thomas and Mr McCulloch thoroughly deserved the honour, Mr Hannan said. There are seven life members of Porirua RSA. Porirua East resident Mr McCulloch served with the British and New Zealand armies, spending World War II in the Middle East, Italy and Korea. Tawa resident Mr Thomas served in the 28th Maori Battalion during World War II, in Egypt and Europe.
