Baker earns writ­ing post

Whi­tireia tu­tor and ed­i­tor Hinemoana Baker has been named the next Writer in Res­i­dence at Vic­to­ria Univer­sity’s in­sti­tute of mod­ern let­ters.

Since grad­u­at­ing in 1995 with a bach­e­lor of arts de­gree, Ms Baker has writ­ten many po­ems, es­says, chil­dren’s sto­ries, songs and stage plays, and her work has been widely pub­lished.

Dur­ing 2013, as well as con­tin­u­ing her cre­ative writ­ing, she had three part-time jobs, in­clud­ing be­ing ed­i­tor of 4th floor, the Whi­tireia cre­ative writ­ing pro­gramme literary jour­nal.

She is also a tu­tor for online stu­dents of the cre­ative writ­ing pro­gramme.

Next year she will give up paid em­ploy­ment to take full ad­van­tage of the op­por­tu­nity to write at Vic­to­ria Univer­sity. She said she in­tended to work on a fam­ily re­search project and another book of po­ems.

A reg­u­lar swim­mer at the Porirua Aquatic Cen­tre, Ms Baker is pleased her of­fice at the univer­sity will al­low her easy ac­cess to the recre­ation cen­tre next door.
