No plans for ice rink to reappear

- By KRIS DANDO

There are no plans for an ice rink to be brought back to Porirua.

About 12,000 people came to the Ice World rink in the city centre last September and October.

The project cost Porirua City Council $271,000, with the bill to ratepayers about $100,000 after ticket sales.

Porirua mayor Nick Leggett said there were no plans to have the rink back, though the council would keep looking at new ways to attract visitors.

‘‘ We have to keep looking at activities to promote the businesses and what we have to offer in Porirua,’’ he said. ‘‘We will consider things like ice rinks that tick all the right boxes.’’

Leggett said the council ran other services, such as swimming pools and libraries, that did not make money but fulfilled a need.
