Sports nominations expected to increase

- By KRIS DANDO

There may be a rise in the number of nominations for the Porirua Sports Awards now that choices can be made online.

Work behind the scenes is well under way for this year’s ceremony, which takes place at Te Rauparaha Arena on November 13.

New judges are likely to come on board and some new trophies have been mooted, as well.

The nomination period is from September 1, 2013, to August 31, 2014.

Awards organiser Lee Adamson, from Porirua Community Trust, said the process had been simplified for individuals and clubs to make nominations.

‘‘We want to be able to give people the opportunity to nominate all year round, rather than during a specified period,’’ she said.

‘‘In the past, some of the summer sports have tended to be forgotten. A lot of people prefer doing things online these days – it’s just the ease of clicking a few keys and you’re done.’’

Adamson said one nomination from a minority sport had already been received via the trust’s website, and she hoped many more came in via that method.

‘‘I’m sure we will get more nominations this way and that’s got to be a good thing for all the sports in Porirua.’’

The trust meets later this month to finalise judges and trophies.

Anyone wanting to make a nomination for a sportsperson, team, coach or service to sport award, go to poriruacommunity trust.org.nz and click on Porirua Sports Awards. You can still make a nomination via mail to the trust’s office in Bridgepoint, Mana.

Anyone wanting to sponsor a table or needing information can email Lee Adamson at lee@mcgf.co.nz.
