Big day out at Pauatahanui Lamb & Calf

- By KRIS DANDO

The organisers of the Pauatahanui Lamb & Calf Day will watch the coming weeks’ weather forecasts with bated breath.

The event takes place this year on November 1, with organisers hoping for a fine day.

The ‘‘city meets country’’ day of activities was tried and true, coordinator Lauren Kennedy said.

Animal rides, music and entertainment, a petting zoo, cow plop bingo, smash the car, mechanical bull, paint ball, crafts and second- hand clothing and many types of food are just some of the attractions.

Kennedy said some of the feature auctions on offer would include having dinner prepared in your home by Duck Creek Cafe chef, Dean McFarland, facial sessions at the Lavender Room, scenic aeroplane flights and a day of serenity in Martinborough’s Live Well Retreats.

She hoped, if the weather was good and the sun was shining on the day, that the current crowd record of 6000 would be bettered.

‘‘We’ve had huge support from the school, parents and businesses in the community, like The Trading Post and Co-op Bar,’’ she said.

‘‘There has been a lot of organising to do, but we’re sure it’s going to be a wonderful day.

‘‘It has become a real community event.’’

She said the organisers were just hoping for good weather to help bring in the crowds.

‘‘It’s always a bit nervy for us, we really need a nice day.’’

Kennedy said in the Lamb & Calf Day in 2012, torrential rain kept the public away. She said she had a target of $60,000 to be raised, which would go towards upgrading computer equipment and the remainder absorbed into the school’s budget.

Entry is by a gold coin donation. The gates are open from 10am till 2pm and the event will take place rain or shine.

This year there will be parking in the Lanes Flat paddocks, opposite the substation.
